New Artists of the 21st Century

It seems as if a new musical artist is born everyday - or every hour.

When websites such as YouTube can give a musician a viral start to their career without having a professional studio or manager, it makes you wonder how important are these old standards of the profession. How important is years of training and a conservatory education? Let's not dwell on those topics, instead....

I want you to find those new artists.

Find a musician who began their career and became either famous or semi-famous through YouTube. Research them. Try to find out all you can. Do they have a website? Who is their fan base and how do they reach out? Do they have a Facebook following or Twitter feed? What kind of music do they perform? Provide an critique of at least 1 song and provide the video or link.

Happy Hunting!

  1. Justin Bieber was the first person that came to mind when reading the topic for the blog. Although my girls (ages 4 & 7) have heard of Justin Bieber, they do not have “Bieber Fever”. I remember all the media attention this young start received when he first came into the mass media spotlight. Bieber’s rise to fame started out as “home-grown” talent posted on YouTube. After being discovered, Bieber has become a teenage pop music icon. With millions of adoring female fans (and some male fans), Justin’s music reaches out to the tween/teen girl scene. However, my 4 year old daughter was invited to her friends “Justin Bieber birthday party” and I’ve seen college girls tweeting about him, so I know that there is not really an age limit to his music. Bieber has an official music page, but has several fan websites, as well as a Twitter and Facebook account. The “Bieber Fever” seems to have slowed down some, but is still raging.
Never Say Never, by Justin Bieber, featuring Jaden Smith, has a good message. Adding Jaden’s rap in the middle of the song is a nice contrast to Bieber’s smooth voice. The repetition of “never say never” throughout the ending chorus drives home the message of the song. Justin’s sustained high notes and the bouncy back beat add vibrancy and life to the song, as a whole.
